The confluence of the Cape Fear River and the North East Cape Fear River anchors this coastal North Carolina landscape. At the close of the twentieth century, the area shows a distinct transition from the industrial and transport hubs of Navassa and Wilmington in the south to the more dispersed communities of Castle Hayne and Wrightsboro further north. The riverine environment is heavily modified, featuring a levee system, a massive pumping station, and a series of tailings ponds associated with Lake Sutton.
