About this map

The Stillwater River carves a deep path through the high terrain of the Custer National Forest in this 1980s survey. This portion of the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness is defined by sharp elevation shifts and numerous high-altitude water bodies, including Sioux Charley Lake and the aptly named Nightmare Lake. The landscape is dominated by massive peaks such as Cathedral Peak and Cathedral Point, which rise above the drainages of Flood Creek and Falls Creek.
