About this map

The Arkansas River serves as the central artery for this late nineteenth-century landscape, carving a fertile corridor through the high plains of southern Colorado. In the years following the 1889 survey by A. H. Thompson and Willard D. Johnson, the region’s development followed the competing paths of major steel rails. The Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad skirts the southern bank of the river, connecting the growing settlement of Rocky Ford to Catlin, while the Missouri Pacific Railroad cuts a straight line across the northern plateau through Numa and Meredith. This division of transport lines highlights the transition from river-bottom ranching at sites like Lone Tree Ranch to the rail-dependent shipping points of Olney and Lolita. Away from the tracks, the terrain is defined by vital water sources like Antelope Springs and the drainage of Apishapa River, illustrating the high-plains struggle for water access before extensive irrigation transformed the valley.
