Elk Summit stands as a central navigation point in this mid-1960s survey of Idaho’s interior wilderness. The landscape is defined by the convergence of the Clearwater National Forest and the Nez Perce National Forest, with the expansive Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness covering much of the terrain. Human presence is limited to the high-elevation Work Center and the Hoodoo Lake Campground, connected by a network of established Pack Trails that served as the primary transit routes through this backcountry.
