Settlement is concentrated in the lower valleys, particularly around Cedar Springs, where the Keesling Cem and Asbury Ch serve the local community. Further south, the Appalachian Trail follows the high ground of Iron Mountain and Canadays Ridge. Small mountain communities like Summit and Ashland are tucked into the hollows, while family names are preserved through landmarks like Horne Knob and the Steffy Cem near the northern border.
