Superior National Forest encompasses the vast majority of this landscape, characterized by an intricate network of glacial lakes and portage-connected waterways. The northern reach is defined by the Little Indian Sioux River and the large expanse of Cummings Lake, while the central portion is dominated by the namesake Chad Lake and Buck Lake. These water bodies are connected by short overland portages such as Chad-Buck and Buck-Western, illustrating the traditional wilderness travel routes of the region.
