About this map

The waters of Lake Fausse Pointe and the Bayou Teche define this region of the Atchafalaya Basin, where land and water merge into a complex network of bayous and canals. In the southern portion, the settlements of Charenton, Matilda, and Sorrel follow the course of the Bayou Teche, a historic waterway that once served as a primary transportation artery through the wetlands. The landscape is heavily influenced by large-scale water management, notably the Little Pass Atchafalaya Basin Floodway and the Charenton Drainage and Navigation Canal.
