Chimayo and its neighboring villages sit at the intersection of high desert arroyos and the foothills of the Santa Fe National Forest. This landscape is defined by its complex hydrography, where traditional water management is evidenced by the Quarteles Ditch and numerous seasonal drainages like Arroyo de la Morada and Arroyo de Chinguague. The settlement pattern follows the contours of the land, with small communities such as Los Pachecos, La Puebla, and Rio Chiquito clustered near these watercourses.
