The Santa Rosa Range dominates the western portion of this Humboldt County quadrangle, where the steep terrain of Paiute Canyon and Cottonwood Creek gives way to the high desert floor. Industrial activity is evident in the northern reaches at the Basque Mine, while the southern landscape reflects the management of water and livestock near the Humboldt River. The presence of the Little Gumboot Canal and various Feed Lots indicates a landscape transitioned for agricultural use, supported by a network of drainage and utility infrastructure including a Gas Line and a dedicated Sub Station. This 1983 provisional survey captures the intersection of mining history and modern water management, particularly around the eponymous China Garden area where the canyon runoff meets the valley floor.
