About this map

The W Fork Little Kanawha River and its numerous tributaries, including Straight Run and Lower Nicut Run, define the complex topography of this Central West Virginia landscape. The settlement pattern is typical of the Appalachian Plateau, with small communities such as Chloe, Minnora, and Nebo established at creek junctions and along narrow valley floors. Dozens of family-named burial grounds, such as Chenoweth-Reip Cem and Bailey-Siers Cem, are scattered across the ridges and hollows, serving as vital markers for genealogical research in this rural portion of Calhoun County. The area remains dominated by its natural drainage systems, where roads like Co Rte 26 follow the winding paths of Walnut Fork and other local waterways. Prominent high points like Mule Knob overlook a dense network of timbered hills where the boundaries of Braxton, Clay, and Roane counties meet.
