About this map

The Ottawa National Forest dominates this section of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, where the landscape is defined by the convergence of the South Branch Ontonagon River and the Cisco Branch Ontonagon River. A labyrinth of forest service trails, such as Nfst-6930-Pa Trl and Nfst-6934 Trl, provides access to the dense woodland and the numerous waterways that feed into the larger Ontonagon system. Along the Ontonagon Wild and Scenic River, the topography is punctuated by Wolverine Falls and the Eighteen Mile Rapids, indicating the significant elevation changes that drive the local hydrography. Small tributaries like Tenmile Creek and Choate Creek drain the surrounding timberlands, while the boundary between Gogebic and Ontonagon counties bisects the western portion of the forest, marking a jurisdictional divide in this largely uninhabited wilderness area.
