Tohatchi sits on the western edge of the expansive Tohatchi Flats in McKinley County, where the high desert landscape is defined by an intricate network of drainage systems. The hydrology of this area is notably complex, with Red Willow Wash and Muddy Wash converging near the primary settlement, while Chuska Lake serves as a significant water feature to the northwest. To the east, the terrain rises into dramatic geological formations including Grey Ridge Canyon and the northern reach of Window Rock Canyon.
