Shoshone National Forest contains some of the highest elevations in the Absaroka Range, defined by a series of steep drainages and prominent volcanic summits. The terrain is dominated by high-altitude features such as Wapiti Ridge in the northwest and the flat-topped Ishawooa Mesa to the east. Several significant watercourses, including Ishawooa Cr and Lapalli Cr, have carved deep valleys into the landscape, originating from the snowmelt of peaks like Clouds Home Peak and Kingfisher Peak. This 2015 survey illustrates the drainage patterns and topographic relief of the wilderness before more recent geological or climate shifts may have altered the seasonal flow of high-country streams like Deer Cr and Cabin Cr. Named landmarks such as Horses Head and Gobblers Knob provide essential navigational references for those studying the backcountry of Park County.
