The landscape is defined by a dense network of competing rail lines, including the Harlem Division and the Poughkeepsie and Eastern R. R., which serviced the region's extraction sites like Weed Mines and the Ancram Leadmines. These operations were vital to the local economy of the Ancram and Copake townships, where the processing of ore required the water power found at New Forge and Spaulding Furnace.

Beyond the industrial nodes, the map reveals a well-settled agricultural interior characterized by numerous small hamlets such as Gallatinville, Suydam, and Pumpkin Hollow.
