Cimarron sits at the northern edge of this high-altitude landscape, where the Cimarron River winds through Colfax County. The terrain is defined by dramatic geological formations, most notably the prominent Tooth of Time Ridge and the expansive Coyote Mesa. These heights overlook a network of seasonal and perennial waters, including Urraca Cr and Chicoso Cr, which feed toward Hagerdon Lake.

A system of named local roads, such as Cito Rd and Deer Run Rd, provides access to the interior canyons and ridges. Further south, the high plateaus of Urraca Mesa and the open Buffalo Pasture suggest a landscape used for both grazing and navigation. Remote water sources like Toothache Spring and Backache Spring are tucked into the drainages below the western ridges, serving as critical landmarks for those traversing the high country between the river and Rayado Cr.
