About this map

Phelps Lake dominates the southern landscape of this 1950s coastal plain survey, its northern shore protected by Pettigrew State Park. The region is defined by an extensive network of drainage infrastructure, including the Thirty Foot Canal, Nine Foot Canal, and Moccasin Canal, which permitted the agricultural development of the low-lying Scuppernong lands. This intricate system of locks and channels illustrates the mid-century effort to manage the water table for farming between the lake and the Scuppernong River.
