Targhee National Forest dominates the eastern half of this landscape, where the terrain transitions from the high eastern ridges down toward the open expanses of North Antelope Flat. The area is defined by a series of prominent volcanic features, including Crystal Butte, Birdseye Butte, and Service Butte, which rise distinctly above the surrounding plains.

Water resources in this arid high-country environment are sparse, marked primarily by a chain of three small upland basins: Davis Lake No 1, Davis Lake No 2, and Davis Lake No 3. A network of primitive transit routes, labeled as Pack Trail and Jeep Trail, connects these remote landmarks. Isolated water developments such as the Fogg Butte Well and a Hunting Well suggest the area's importance for seasonal livestock grazing or resource management during the mid-1960s.
