About this map

The San Gabriel Mountains dominate the northern landscape of this map, falling sharply into the valley where citrus groves and early settlements once defined the region. This 1894 survey, reprinted just after the turn of the century, captures a transitional era when the San Gabriel Timber Land Reserve occupied the high peaks of Cucamonga Peak and Sugarloaf Peak. Water management and early industrialization are evident through the Power House and the numerous canyon drainages such as San Antonio Canyon and Deer Canyon that fed the developing agricultural lands below.
