About this map

The San Gabriel Mountains dominate the northern half of this 1894 survey, their steep canyons feeding the alluvial plains of the Chino Valley. This era shows the San Bernardino valley during a period of intensive agricultural and transit development, defined by the San Bernardino Base Line. The landscape is a grid of early citrus-era settlements and rail junctions, where the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe R. R. and the Southern Pacific R. R. converge near Ontario and Upland. Small agricultural colonies like Ioamosa and Rochester appear alongside established towns like Cucamonga and Claremont. In the high country, a lone Power House and remote flats such as Bear Flat and Browns Flat suggest the early utilization of mountain water and timber. The southern reaches are marked by the Chino Branch and the narrow gauge Santa Ana Del Chino line, serving the ranch lands of the Santa Ana Del Chino grant.
