Cumberland serves as the industrial and transportation hub of the Potomac highlands on this mid-century topographic record. The landscape is defined by the narrow gap through Wills Mountain known as The Narrows, where the Western Maryland, Baltimore and Ohio, and Cumberland and Pennsylvania railroads converge alongside Wills Creek. This constriction forced the concentration of infrastructure and settlement, including Narrows Park and Corriganville, while the National Pike winds westward through the hills.
