Cypress and the southern Illinois wetlands of the Cache River bottomlands define this 2015 study. The landscape is a complex network of hydrological features, including Cypress Creek, Limekiln Slough, and Morgan Pond, which cut through the low-lying Hogans Bottoms. These watercourses have historically dictated the placement of settlements and transport routes, such as the village of Perks and the railway infrastructure at Joppa Junction.
