Dale sits at the northern edge of this terrain, positioned along the North Fork John Day River where the Pendleton-John Day Hwy US 395 crosses the water. Much of the landscape is dominated by the Umatilla National Forest, which is defined by a dense network of forest development roads like Nat For Dev Rd 700 and Nat For Dev Rd 3971. These routes provide access to the timbered ridges and mountain meadows that characterize the high country of the Blue Mountains.
