McClanahan Meadow and the surrounding high country of Wheeler County define this landscape at the eastern edge of the Ochoco National Forest. The terrain is characterized by a series of deep basins and gulches, including Kangaroo Basin, Day Basin, and Cottonwood Basin, which channel the drainage of Rattlesnake Creek and Cottonwood Creek toward the north. This 2011 survey shows a sparsely populated area where natural water sources like China Camp Spring and Breathing Spring were critical for seasonal use.
