Buffalo Lake sits at the center of this high plains landscape on the border of Quay and Curry counties. The terrain is defined by a distinct escarpment where the flat tableland breaks into a series of drainages and prominent rises. Landmarks like Round Mountain, Park Hill, and Little Park Hill provide vertical relief above the surrounding plains. The drainage systems are marked by deep incisions such as Dripping Spring Canyon and Day Canyon, which cut through the caprock toward the lower elevations to the north.
