The Mississippi River dominates this landscape, carving a complex network of side channels and wetlands that define the border between Iowa and Wisconsin. In the early 21st century, this corridor retains its intricate hydrography, featuring the wide Lake Winneshiek and numerous backwaters like Big Slough and McDonald Slough. The confluence with the Upper Iowa River is marked by a cluster of riverine landforms, including Henderson Island and Battle Island.

Transitioning from the river bottom, the topography rises sharply to heights such as Winneshiek Bluff. The eastern Wisconsin side is characterized by a series of high ridges and deep hollows, including Lawrence Ridge and Bean Hollow. This terrain dictates the settlement patterns of De Soto and Victory, which hug the narrow strip of land between the river and the bluffs, while the agricultural community of Red Mound occupies the higher ground to the east.
