The Dead River valley and the surrounding timberlands of Somerset and Franklin counties are documented here during the mid-1920s, just before the landscape was altered by significant hydroelectric developments. This wilderness region, organized into traditional Maine plantations like Carrying Place Plantation and Highland Plantation, was defined by seasonal camps and isolated homesteads. Small settlements and local landmarks such as Joe Farm, Ledge House, and the West Carry Camps provided rare points of habitation along the river and the historic carrying place portage routes.
