The focal point of the area is the prominent Open Pit Iron Mine and its associated Mine Dump near the small settlement of Desert Mound. Beyond the industrial zones, the terrain rises into the Eightmile Hills and Swett Hills, with the peak of Mt Claron overlooking the drainages of Leach Canyon Creek and Duncan Creek.
