About this map

The Salt River Ind Res and the northern reaches of the Sonoran landscape define this 1904 survey, captured before the massive expansion of the Phoenix metropolitan area. Irrigation infrastructure is already central to the region's character, with the Consolidated Canal and Highland Canal branching off the Salt River near a prominent Dam. These waterworks stand in contrast to the arid uplands of the Usery Mts and Goldfield Mts, where isolated water sources like Cottonwood Spring and the Desert Well (212 feet deep) were vital for survival and ranching.
