The Monte Cristo Range dominates the northern landscape of this Esmeralda County terrain, where high-desert peaks give way to the expansive Big Smoky Valley. Mining activity is evident on the western slopes, particularly at the Castle Peak Mine and nearby unnamed Mines beneath Castle Peak. These operations reflect the late-1960s mineral exploration characteristic of this central Nevada corridor.

Logistics and water management define the valley floor. An Old Railroad Grade cuts a diagonal path across the alluvial fans, passing through the small settlement at McLeans. This infrastructure, alongside isolated water sources like Desert Well and Dry Well, illustrates the challenge of sustaining transport and industry in the arid basin. Near the southern edge, the terrain shifts into shifting Sand Dunes, providing a sharp contrast to the prominent outcropping of Black Rock and the narrow passage of Devils Gate.
