Owyhee Lake dominates this high-desert landscape in Malheur County, where the water's surface reflects a normal pool elevation of 2655 feet. The reservoir, created by the damming of the Owyhee River, is framed by dramatic geological features such as the Breaks and a prominent ridge known as The Tongue. Historical traces of former settlement remain at Watson Cem, situated on a point of land overlooking the eastern shore.

The rugged terrain is defined by volcanic landmarks like Diamond Butte and Red Butte, which rise above deep incisions like Red Butte Canyon and Blue Canyon. Numerous water sources are documented across this arid expanse, including Hot Spring and various perennial flows like Red Rock Spring and Gillespie Spring. A network of simple Jeep Trails provides the only recorded access through the Black Rocks.
