The Beaverhead River flows through the western edge of this landscape, its course flanked by a complex network of agricultural irrigation works including the Owen Ditch and Stodden Ditch. Just east of the city of Dillon, the terrain transitions into the high benches and draws of the Beaverhead Valley. The development of water management is a defining characteristic of this area, evidenced by the Dillon Canal, East Bench Canal, and the South Side Reservoir nestled in the southern hills.
