About this map

Dime and Happy Jack anchor the narrow strip of habitable land between the Mississippi River and the expansive wetlands of the Mississippi Delta in this late 19th-century survey. The landscape is dominated by an intricate network of coastal lakes and bayous, including Lake Jean Louis Robin and Lake Coquille, which transition into the open waters of Black Bay. This era shows the critical transportation corridors of the river-adjacent settlements, most notably the N. O. Ft. J. & G. I. R. R. running parallel to the riverbank. Further east, the intricate waterways of Bayou Terre Aux Boeufs and River Aux Chenes illustrate the complex hydrology of Plaquemines and St Bernard parishes before modern levee systems and coastal erosion significantly altered the shoreline and marsh drainage patterns.
