The confluence of high desert plateaus and deeply carved canyons defines this portion of the Apache National Forest in Greenlee County. Dominating the central and eastern landscape are the expansive reaches of Sunflower Mesa and Dix Mesa, which overlook the rugged drainages of the Blue River and the San Francisco River. The terrain is marked by numerous water sources critical to this arid environment, ranging from the isolated Hickey Spring to the strategically placed Big Tank Series Number One.
