About this map

The Butterfield Stage Route traces a path through the southern portion of this region, crossing the Dome Valley near the Gila River. This corridor reflects the deep historical transit patterns of the Southwest, where early overland routes followed the water and manageable grades of the desert floor. To the north, the landscape shifts toward the Muggins Mountains and the extensive Yuma Proving Ground, where the terrain is marked by numerous washes such as Vinegarroon Wash and Castle Dome Wash.
