1979 Map of Dows East

USGS Topo · Published 1980

About this map

The Iowa River winds through the southwestern corner of this Iowa landscape, where the settlement of Dows sits at the junction of the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific and another major rail line. The terrain is defined by its agricultural character and the transport networks of the late 1970s, including the Chicago and North-Western railroad crossing the northern sections. Small rural landmarks provide critical points of reference for local history, such as Morgan Ch and several burial grounds including Mount Hope Cem, Olson Cem, and St Peters Cem. The landscape also shows signs of local industry and recreation, from the Gravel Pits and Quarry near the river to a riverside Golf Course and a remote Landing Strip in the southern township of Oakland.
