Transportation through the valleys is dictated by the ridge-and-valley topography, with the Southern Railroad running along the floor of Little Sand Mountain and numerous named gaps providing passage over the heights, including Snake Gap, Wooten Gap, and Hammond Gap. To the southeast, the terrain rises sharply toward De Soto State Park, where Wade Gulf and Allen Point overlook the rugged surroundings, preserving a snapshot of northeast Alabama before modern development altered these rural corridors.
