The Big Hole River carves a deep valley through this southwestern Montana landscape, serving as a natural boundary between Beaverhead and Madison counties. The central corridor is defined by the Big Hole River Bridge and the Frontage Rd, which follow the river's path. To the east, the terrain rises sharply toward the prominent summit of McCartney Mtn, while the western slopes are dissected by numerous drainages including Sassman Gulch and Brownes Gulch.
