Along its banks, the rail networks of the Chicago Milwaukee St Paul and Pacific and the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific follow the river's curve, connecting riverfront towns like Fairport and Andalusia. The river is fragmented by a complex system of sloughs and chutes, including Vealey Chute and the Geneva Island Slough, which isolate large landmasses such as Geneva Island.

Inland from the river, the topography transitions into a dense network of rural school districts and small agricultural settlements. The map preserves the locations of numerous community landmarks, such as the White Eagle School, Buffalo Center School, and Point Pleasant School, which served the scattered farming families of Drury and Buffalo Prairie. To the south, the terrain is carved by Copperas Creek and Eliza Creek, where smaller hamlets like Petersville and Wrayville were established away from the primary rail lines.
