El Indio is the primary settlement on this borderland landscape in Maverick County, where the Rio Grande forms the international boundary between the United States and Mexico. The community is organized along a grid of local streets including Hidalgo St, Washington St, and Ruidoso St, serving as a hub for the surrounding ranching and agricultural operations. The arid terrain is dissected by several drainages, most notably Saus Creek, Mule Creek, and Cuevas Creek, which flow toward the river. To the northeast, water management is evident at Halsell Lake Number 2 and Beaver Tank. This 2016 survey illustrates the modern road network centered on FM 1021, which connects the town to larger regional routes like FM 2644 and the El Indio Hwy.
