The Cowanesque River valley serves as a primary corridor for transportation and industry in Tioga County at the turn of the century. Parallel rail lines, the New York Central and Hudson River R. R. and the Buffalo and Susquehanna R. R., connect the active boroughs of Knoxville, Osceola, and Elkland along the northern edge of the map. This infrastructure facilitated the movement of goods through the steep drainages of the Allegheny Plateau, where smaller settlements like Academy Corners and Little Marsh served local agricultural needs.
