Ellijay and East Ellijay serve as the focal point of this North Georgia mountain landscape, situated at the confluence of the Ellijay River and the Cartecay River to form the Coosawattee River. The terrain is characterized by a dense network of ridges and gaps, including Hickorynut Gap and Stanley Gap, which dictated early settlement patterns and the winding routes of the Louisville and Nashville RR and the Marietta and North Georgia RR.

Industry and transport are evidenced by the Boundary Mine near the Tennessee line and several water crossings like Bakers Ferry and Shallow Ford. The southeastern quadrant features the dramatic drop of Amicalola Falls, while the northeastern portion is largely encompassed by the Cherokee National Forest. Small communities such as Morganton, Epworth, and Youngcane dot the valleys between the high peaks of Bell Knob and Mt Pisgah, representing the established rural life of Gilmer and Fannin Counties at the end of the 19th century.
