The Red River defines the southern boundary of this landscape along the border of Oklahoma and Texas, where it meets the Salt Fork Red River in a wide, braided floodplain. In the northern reaches of the quadrangle, the community of Elmer is oriented around a grid of streets including Main St and 4th St. To the east, the settlement of Hess serves as a local landmark near the Hess Cem, marking a long-standing point of community interest in Jackson County. The terrain is characterized by the descent into the river valley, notably through the drainage of Red Hollow. This 2022 survey illustrates the enduring rural road network and the way historical boundaries between Jackson and Wilbarger counties follow the shifting course of the river.
