Smoke Creek Desert dominates the western portion of this Great Basin landscape, where the arid flats meet the ascending peaks of the Fox Range. The small settlement of Sano sits along a north-south corridor, marking a point of human presence in a terrain defined by dramatic elevation changes and dry washes. To the south, the Terraced Hills provide a complex series of ridges and valleys that transition toward the lower basin floor.
