Evidence of the region’s agricultural and early industrial roots persists in the naming of Cowan Mill and Caylor Kesterson Mill along Indian Cr, as well as the numerous family cemeteries like Chadwell Cem and Yeary Cem dotting the lower slopes. To the north, the presence of the Coal Company Rd near Alva indicates the proximity of mining activity in the Kentucky mountains, while the jagged White Rocks stand as a prominent landmark for those traversing the historic mountain passes.
