Fairplay sits at the western edge of this South Park landscape, where the Middle Fork South Platte River winds through a complex system of historical water management. This 2019 survey documents a high-altitude drainage basin defined by a dense network of irrigation and mining-era water works, including the Anderson Ditch Number 1, Miller-Chapman Ditch, and Ray and Edmonson Ditches. These features trace the early agricultural and industrial efforts to move water across the flats east of the town center. To the east, the terrain rises sharply into Red Hill and the long spine of Reinecker Ridge, separating the river valley from Trout Cr. Local history is anchored by the Fairplay Cem and the Old Fairplay Cem, situated near the edge of the terrace overlooking the river's path through the valley floor.
