Sugar production and coastal commerce define this mid-century survey of northeastern Puerto Rico. Numerous agricultural estates, or colonias, such as Colonia Monserrate, Colonia Margarita, and Colonia Santa Maria, are distributed across the landscape, connected by the tracks of the Fajardo Development railroad. This industrial rail network facilitates the movement of crops from the interior valleys toward the primary settlement at Fajardo and its maritime outlet at Puerto Real.

The coastline transitions from the popular sands of Playa de Luquillo to the prominent headlands of Cabeza Chiquita and the secluded waters of Laguna Grande. Inland, the terrain rises sharply into the foothills of the Sierra De Luquillo, where small rural institutions like Escuela Río Chiquito and Escuela Peñon serve the upland residents. Along the eastern shore, the U S Naval Reservation near Pta Figuerita represents a significant military footprint, contrasting with the traditional fishing and seafaring activities found at Las Croabas and Sardinera.
