Along the northern bank of the river, the small riverfront communities of Utopia, Rural, and Wellsburg highlight a historic pattern of shoreline settlement. Local history and genealogy are preserved through numerous family and community burial grounds, such as Smyrna Cem, Hard Scrabble Cem, and Bartlow Cem. Across the water, Augusta occupies the southern bank at the Augusta Bar, where Turtle Creek and Little Turtle Creek join the main river flow below the heights of Shinkles Ridge.
