Green River carves a deep, sinuous path through this high-desert landscape on the border of Carbon and Uintah Counties. The river's descent is marked by a series of named navigational hazards, including Little Rock House Riffle, Jack Creek Rapids, Big Canyon Rapids, Firewater Rapids, and Cedar Ridge Rapids. These features define the hydrologic character of the canyon floor, where limited flat ground such as Rock House Bottom provides rare breaks in the vertical relief.
