Davy Crockett National Forest dominates the southern landscape of this area, where the boundary between Cherokee and Houston counties is defined by the winding course of the Old River Channel. The terrain is deeply etched by a complex drainage network, including the headwaters of Sandy Creek and numerous branches like Mathis Mill Br and Morrill Fish Pond Br.

Settlement patterns in the early 21st century remain concentrated around the rural communities of Morrill, Brunswick, and Wild Hurst. Local family history and genealogy are anchored by several remote burial sites, including Hoot Cem, Arnold Cem, and Thompson Cem. The hydrology of the Neches River basin is evident in the numerous oxbows and named water features such as McCall Lake, Upper Lake, and the distinctive wetland known as The Wheels.
