Forest Green and the surrounding river bottomlands of the Middle Fork Little Chariton River define this part of the Chariton and Howard County border. The landscape is a network of floodplain features and small settlements, including Shannondale and the smaller community of Oil City. Several oxbow lakes, such as Icehouse Lake, Goose Lake, and Horseshoe Lake, remain as evidence of the river's shifting path through the alluvial valley.
